West Ham United are now hopeful of beating Everton to Amadou Onana after a change of stance over his wages claims an insider.
When it comes to transfers things never seem to be straightforward for West Ham do they?
In just over 12 hours West Ham’s move for Lille powerhouse midfielder Onana has been on, then off and now it looks on again!
West Ham had a fourth bid for Onana accepted and were said to be in talks over personal terms yesterday.
Then last night West Ham’s Premier League rivals Everton came out of nowhere to enter the race for Lille midfield ace Onana.
Persistence looked set to pay off for David Moyes as it was widely reported that West Ham had finally seen a bid accepted by Lille for Onana.
But it seems former Hammer Frank Lampard had a touch of Eddie Howe’s overnight as the desperate Everton boss launched an 11th hour bid to hijack West Ham’s move for Onana.
The story broke via reliable Italian transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano late last night.
“West Ham have full agreement with Lille for Amadou Omana on £33m fee but there’s no agreement on personal terms,” Romano said on Wednesday night.
“Been told Onana prefers Everton as destination, as of now – this is why the West Ham deal is stalling.”
Given the Toffees are arguably weaker than last season – when they narrowly avoided relegation – it looks set to be another difficult campaign for Everton.
So West Ham, who should also have European football to offer, would surely not be unduly concerned by Everton’s interest?
There was huge disappointment at West Ham when new reports this morning claimed the 6ft 5in Belgian preferred a move to Everton because of a superior financial package.
That put the Toffees in the box seat to snatch him from under Moyes’ nose according to The Daily Mail and Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri).
It seemed the incentive was more money at Everton than West Ham were willing to give the 20-year-old.
But it seems there is good news from top sources at West Ham this afternoon.
Because West Ham are now hopeful of beating Everton to Onana after a change of stance over his wages claims an insider speaking to Claret and Hugh.
“Sources at the London Stadium insist that the Irons remain in the running to sign the Belgium international and are still hopeful of reaching an agreement over personal terms,” a Hammers insider told Claret and Hugh.
“There is a belief the player would want around £100,000-per-week in wages.
“Onana’s camp have been in talks with the Hammers since the bid was accepted and boss David Moyes is understood to be a big fan of the player.”
Earlier today we suggested the emergence of Everton late on could be Onana’s agent working the room to get his client a better package with West Ham.
You will get this kind of brinkmanship in mega money deals after all.
Let’s hope that is the case and West Ham can get this signing statement done ahead of Everton, if the Toffees are indeed even in the running at all.
