West Ham United will be missing £65m worth of new signings for the season opener against Man City according to an insider claim.

David Moyes’ West Ham side take on Pep Guardiola’s champions Manchester City as they begin their title defense at the London Stadium.

Ironically the Hammers faced Manchester City in their final home game of last season, with an exciting 2-2 draw proving a fitting farewell to retiring captain Mark Noble.

Man City will present West Ham with a different problem this time around as their new striker Erling Haaland takes his place up front.

West Ham fans had started to forget what it was like to sign a top quality striker.

But the Hammers have been celebrating the arrival of their own towering new forward, 6ft 5in Italian international Gianluca Scamacca.

West Ham have made four signings so far this summer, but only three of them have been new arrivals in the shape of £30m defender Nayef Aguerd, £12m midfielder Flynn Downes and £35m Scamacca.

It is a daunting task to face Man City in the first game and it seems it has just been made an even tougher prospect for Moyes.

Because West Ham will be missing £65m worth of new signings for the Man City opener according to an insider claim.

Hammers fans already knew £30m defender Aguerd was going to miss out, with the Moroccan centre-back expected to be out for around three months.

Now Claret and Hugh claim £35m striker Scamacca will not be in the squad for Man City either.

“New striker Gianluca Scamacca is likely to be missing from the squad which meets Manchester City this weekend,” Claret and Hugh report.

“The Italian remains short on fitness according to David Moyes and it seems highly probable that we will be lining up with a team similar to that which ended last season.

“Manager Moyes is determined to ensure that the front man is entirely ready for the new season which has given us a tough start with City followed by newly promoted Forest, Aston Villa and Spurs.”

Hammers fans will be understandably frustrated by the news.

West Ham have effectively had over seven months – since a barren January window – to identify and sign players as part of Moyes’ big summer rebuild.

The fact is the Hammers need at least another three or four signings to be competitive this season and without Aguerd and Scamacca they will be going into the new campaign well short.

Given the Hammers play a large chunk of the season within the first month or so due to the winter World Cup, a strong start is essential.

Hopes had been high Scamacca would be at least fit enough for a place on the West Ham bench against Man City having looked sharp in a training video.

But it appears Moyes has reservations due to his lack of match action with Sassuolo in pre-season as the Italian club wrapped him in cotton wool ahead of an impending move.
