Kevin De Bruyne and Sam Kerr named The Athletic’s Player of the Year award winners

The Athletic held their third ‘End of Season Awards’ show, with Kevin De Bruyne and Sam Kerr named the Premier League and Women’s Super League’s Player of the Year respectively.

On receiving the award, De Bruyne told The Athletic: “It’s a pleasure to win these awards.

“To receive individual recognition at the end of a season means that we have achieved success as a team and this is what every player strives for.

“It’s been a long season but for it to end the way it did was a fantastic reward for all of us involved.”

West Brom sign John Swift on three-year deal from Reading

West Bromwich Albion have signed John Swift on a three-year deal, the club have announced.

Swift, 26, will join Steve Bruce’s side when his contract with fellow Championship side Reading expires this summer.

The midfielder made 202 appearances for Reading after signing from Chelsea in 2016, scoring 33 goals.

Andre-Frank Anguissa complete permanent transfer to Napoli in £ 14.7m deal

Napoli have confirmed the permanent signing of Andre-Frank Anguissa from Fulham for € 17.3 million (£ 14.7 million).

The Cameroon international, 26, joined the Serie A club on loan last summer with an option to buy, making 25 league appearances in total.

Aston Villa agree £ 26 million transfer for Sevilla’s Diego Carlos

Aston Villa have confirmed an agreement to sign Diego Carlos from Sevilla for a fee of £ 26 million.

The Athletic reported on Wednesday that the Midlands club were exploring the possibility of signing the center-back. Carlos was being targeted by Steven Gerrard to improve his defensive options.

Leeds confirm Brenden Aaronson transfer from Red Bull Salzburg on five-year contract

Leeds United have signed Brenden Aaronson from Red Bull Salzburg on a five-year contract.

Although a fee was not disclosed by Leeds, The Athletic understands the West Yorkshire club will pay a fee in the region of $ 28 million for the 21-year-old attacking midfielder.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: I played without an ACL for six months and barely slept

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has claimed he played without an anterior cruciate ligament for the last six months of the season and barely slept because of the pain.

AC Milan confirmed the striker underwent surgery on Wednesday, which will rule him out for up to eight months. He had an injury-hit season, yet still managed to help Milan win Serie A, scoring eight goals in 27 appearances across all competitions.

Now the 40-year-old has detailed just how tough the last half a year has been, writing: “For the past six months I played without an ACL in my left knee.

Lucy Bronze becomes the latest high-profile star to depart Manchester City

Manchester City have announced Lucy Bronze will leave the club at the end of next month.

Bronze, 30, will follow Caroline Weir and Georgia Stanway in departing the Academy Stadium this summer.

The right-back, who has been capped 87 times by England, has had two spells at Manchester City.

Manchester United football director John Murtough has said Erik ten Hag was the “standout choice” to become the club’s permanent manager.

Ten Hag, 52, was named as Manchester United’s next manager in April after impressing Murtough and other Old Trafford chiefs during an extensive interview process.

Murtough has insisted Manchester United landed their No 1 target due to Ten Hag’s “passion, energy and enthusiasm”.

Manchester United to face Champions League conquerors Atletico Madrid in pre-season

Manchester United will face Atletico Madrid in a pre-season game in Norway on July 30.

It will be United’s first trip to Norway since 2019. The match will take place at the Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo, where they took on Kristiansund in their previous visit to the country.

United were knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico in the round of 16 earlier this season.

Jose Mourinho vows to stay at Roma after Europa Conference League win

Jose Mourinho celebrated Roma’s Europa Conference League win by insisting he will be staying at the club this summer.

The Portuguese manager won the inaugural edition of the competition on Wednesday night. Mourinho’s side beat Feyenoord 1-0 courtesy of a Nicolo Zaniolo goal.

It is the Serie A side’s first-ever major UEFA tournament win – although they did pick up the Fairs Cup in the 1960s.

Manchester City-bound striker Julian Alvarez scored six goals for River Plate in the Copa Libertadores group stage on Wednesday.

Alvarez, 22, took home two match balls as his River Plate side ran out 8-1 winners against Peruvian outfit Alianza Lima.

Jose Mourinho added another European title to his illustrious trophy cabinet by leading Roma to their first piece of silverware in 14 years.

The Portuguese tactician helped his Roma side win the inaugural Europa Conference League with a 1-0 victory over Feyenoord.

He now has five European trophies to his name, with his latest triumph adding to the two Champions Leagues and two Europa Leagues he had already won.
