Hertha Berlin overcome Hamburg to avoid Bundesliga relegation

Hertha Berlin beat Hamburg 2-0 in the second leg of their relegation play-off to avoid dropping into Bundesliga II.

In the regular season, Hertha finished 16th in the Bundesliga, dropping into the play-off position on the final day, on goal difference alone.

Hamburg placed third in the final Bundesliga 2 standings, missing out on automatic promotion by three points.

At the end of each season, the bottom two clubs in the Bundesliga are relegated to Bundesliga II.

Stuart Pearce has stepped down from his role as West Ham United first-team coach, the club have announced.

In a statement on the club website, Pearce said: “It is with a heavy heart that I have made this decision to leave West Ham United.”

Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney omitted from Scotland squad

Kieran Tierney has been omitted from Scotland’s squad for the World Cup play-off semi-final with Ukraine on 1 June, but Nathan Patterson is included.

Both defenders are recovering from surgery and have not played since the end of March.

Steve Clarke has named a pool of 28 for a possible five fixtures next month, including three Nations League games.

“Myself and my staff, we’ve known for a little while that Kieran wouldn’t be ready for these games,” said Clarke.

“Disappointing for Kieran and obviously disappointing for us.”

Kylian Mbappe called Florentino Perez personally about Real Madrid rejection

Kylian Mbappe personally called Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to inform him about his decision to remain at Paris Saint-Germain.

Mbappe seemed to be on the cusp of a move to Real before agreeing to stay at the Parc des Princes over the weekend.

Speaking at a press conference regarding his new three-year contract at PSG on Monday, Mbappe said: “I have a lot of respect for Real Madrid and Florentino Perez.

“They did everything for me and tried to make me very happy, that’s why I had to call him personally, we’ve got a close relationship.

“I just decided for myself and I made the best decision.”

Dortmund make their move

The season is only just over (and actually still going for a fair few teams), but Dortmund have also announced a signing.

Salih Ozcan has joined the club on a four-year contract from fellow Bundesliga side FC Koln.

Ozcan is a 24-year-old Turkey international who operates as a central midfielder.

He is Dortmund’s fourth summer signing already, following the arrivals of Karim Adeyemi, Niklas Sule and Nico Schlotterbeck.
