Ian Holloway has hit out at Thomas Tuchel for blocking the pathway for Chelsea’s young players at Stamford Bridge.

The German head coach has undoubtedly been a success since taking charge of the Blues in the 2020/21 campaign, leading the club to Champions League glory in his first season at the club.

Part of Chelsea’s identity since Tuchel’s arrival has been based on using experienced players to manage and control matches, a markedly different approach to what came before.

Under Frank Lampard there was a real focus on developing young players with the likes of Fikayo Tomori, Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Trevoh Chalobah, and Callum Hudson-Odoi all among those to establish themselves in the starting XI.

Yet now Tomori and Abraham are playing their football with AC Milan and Roma, respectively, while Chalobah and Hudson-Odoi are left on the fringes.

However reflecting on Chelsea’s change of approach, Sam Matterface and Holloway were not impressed.

Speaking on White and Jordan, Matterface explained: “Chelsea have had a great reputation over the last couple of years for bringing through young players into the first team, but last year during the Premier League season not one minute was played by a teenager under Thomas Tuchel.

“If you look at Tottenham it was about four minutes over the season.

“It’s a very difficult league to break into unless something seismic happens like when Chelsea had a transfer embargo so three or four made it in at the same time.”

Holloway responded: “That’s my annoyance.

“Plenty of young players were playing under Frank Lampard, but Tuchel’s come in and put all of the old ones back in.

“That’s not the way forward for Chelsea, it’s not.”
