‘This is agony’ – Sir Alex Ferguson drops Liverpool joke as talkSPORT hosts criticize decision to give Jurgen Klopp manager of the season award double over Man City’s Pep Guardiola

Jurgen Klopp has won a Manager of the Year award double, collecting both the LMA and Premier League gongs, much to the surprise of talkSPORT pundits and the chagrin of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Liverpool boss earned the prizes after finishing second in the league, while also winning the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup and having a chance to win the Champions League when they face Real Madrid in the final this weekend.

Klopp was handed the LMA award at a dinner in London on Tuesday evening, with Ferguson – who the prize is named after – announcing the winner and presenting the trophy.

The Manchester United legend reacted brilliantly as he read out the name of the Liverpool boss, saying: “This is agony, absolute agony!”

While few can question Klopp’s LMA win, with his Liverpool side going closer to winning the quadruple than any other English side in history, there were plenty of questions raised over his Premier League award.

talkSPORT host Jamie O’Hara was baffled how the managed to beat Pep Guardiola, after his Manchester City side were crowned champions in a dramatic final day of the season.

“Klopp hasn’t won the league,” the former Tottenham midfielder said on The Sports Bar.

“Let’s look at what he’s competing with. You have managers like Thomas Frank whose job was to keep Brentford up and he’s finished 13th – that’s an unbelievable season.

“Eddie Howe, bottom of the league when he took over, comes in and leads them to 11th – overachieved.

“Liverpool’s job every season is to win the league and he hasn’t done that. So how does he deserve to be named Premier League Manager of the Year?

“I’m not sure how he deserves that.

“I think that’s unacceptable and it shows why Pep Guardiola gets the hump with the media when he goes on about how everyone loves Liverpool, because he’s won the Premier League, finished top with 93 points, they scored 99 goals, an unbelievable season – how has he not won Manager of the Year? ”

That sentiment was echoed by Gabby Agbonlahor who admitted that the decision does not add up.

He said on the talkSPORT Breakfast show: “I just do not understand how Pep can win the league and not get Premier League Manager of the Season.

“It just does not sit right with me.

“It’s like AC Milan winning the Scudetto and then giving the award to Simone Inzaghi at Inter Milan, when they came second. It does not make sense! ”

Sir Alex continued to joke after handing Klopp the LMA award named in his honor on Tuesday.

Ferguson revealed that when they first met 12 years ago, he advised Klopp “to go to a club with history”, to which he said at the event: “I should have told him to go to Scunthorpe United.”

The Germain’s reply? “That is true. It was when I was first invited to a League Manager’s Association forum.

“I arrived a little bit early but Sir Alex was already there. He saw me and asked me to join him… but whatever he told me that day, I did not understand a word!

“My Scottish at that time was not that good… but since I’ve worked with Andy Robertson and Kenny Dalglish, it’s getting better!”
