Marco Asensio has been discussing his Real Madrid future as he prepares to enter the final year of his contract.

The Spain international, 26, has been linked with Premier League giants Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham in recent weeks, as well as Serie A champions AC Milan. He’s been a key member of Real’s squad since the summer of 2016, playing 235 games.

Asensio has helped Los Blancos lift three La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues and various other trophies. He’s won 26 senior caps and represented Spain at the World Cup in 2018. The playmaker previously played for Mallorca and Espanyol.

As quoted by Spanish outlet Marca, Asensio insists he has three options: signing a new contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, leaving the club this summer or completing the final year of his deal ahead of a free transfer in 12 months’ time. He is yet to decide which option to take.

“I’m focused on the national team,” said Asensio. “When this concentration is over, we will talk. We will see what I will do with my future. Renew or leave Real Madrid? I think there are three possibilities, there is also the option to stay and fulfill my contract year.”

Spain have four Nations League fixtures this month. They drew 1-1 with Portugal in Seville on Thursday and 2-2 with Czech Republic in Prague on Sunday. They face Switzerland and the Czech Republic again over the coming days before the season ends.

Asensio’s outing against the Czechs was his first senior appearance for Spain since the 6-0 win against Germany in November 2020. He was not part of the squad for Euro 2020 and it’s unclear if he’s in Luis Enrique’s plans for the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

Although Asensio was dropped for Spain’s most recent major tournament, he was part of their squad for last summer’s Olympics in Tokyo. He helped Spain win a silver medal, losing 2-1 to Brazil in the final. The victorious team was captained by his former Barcelona rival Dani Alves.

Asensio went on to describe Real manager Carlo Ancelotti, who led the team to three trophies this season, as a “football wise man”. He added: “My future does not have to depend on whether or not I will have a place in the next World Cup.

“Rumors are part of football, and more so at Real Madrid. High-level players are always associated with it. Many players come out every summer and it’s something we have to live with.”

United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Asensio by super-agent Jorge Mendes. Asensio recently appointed Mendes, who represents Cristiano Ronaldo, as his representative. Mendes is not believed to have any other United players on his books.

Asensio missed just seven La Liga games this season but was not always a regular starter under Ancelotti. He played just over 1,700 minutes of league football in 2021-22 – nearly 1,000 minutes fewer than Vinicius Jr. – and was left on the bench for the Champions League final against Liverpool last month, which resulted in a 1-0 win.
