Carles Puyol is one of the greatest captains in football history.
The legendary defender led Barcelona to some extraordinary success after being named club captain in 2004.
Puyol was a fierce competitor who gave absolutely everything to ensure his side emerged victorious every time he stepped on the field.
He was also a professional model. Puyol had respect for his opponents and displayed exemplary sportsmanship whenever on the pitch.
While he always wanted to win, he never rubbed it in the faces of his opponents.
So, when Thiago and Dani Alves did just that 10 years ago, Puyol just had to act.
On April 29, 2012, Barcelona traveled to Rayo for their La Liga clash.
The match was of great importance to Rayo, who were lingering near the bottom of the table with just a few games to go.
But Barca showed their dominance as they crushed the relegation-threatened side 7-0.
Thiago and Alves linked up to score their fifth goal in the 78th minute.
Aves swung a ball into the box and Thiago guided the ball into the back of the net.
The two had already celebrated one of their goals by dancing and they decided to do it again after Barca’s fifth goal.
There’s nothing wrong with celebrating a goal, but given Barca were winning comfortably, Rayo may have considered the duo’s celebration as running salt in their wounds.
Puyol was furious. Recognizing that their dance may have come across as disrespectful, Puyol sprinted up from defense and quickly put an end to their celebration.

Thiago and Alves didn’t dare argue with Puyol and both jogged back to the halfway line. Both apologized for their actions after the game.
“I want to apologize to the Rayo fans who felt offended by the dance. It was never my intention to offend anyone, I just wanted to have a good time,” Alves said after the game, per Tribuna.
“Because they told me once when I was a child that football was all about having a good time. Besides that, great job by the team.”
Thiago also commented: “I apologize if I have offended Rayo during the celebration. The emotions running through me made me make a mistake. It won’t happen again.”
Pep Guardiola also didn’t look impressed on the sideline and grilled his players after the game.
“We apologize for it, that’s not the attitude of Barça players. It won’t happen again,” Guardiola said, per the Metro.
Puyol breaking up Thiago and Alves’ celebration against Rayo is one of many examples showing why he’s one of the greatest captains in football history.
