Djed Spence got the last laugh after poking fun at former manager Neil Warnock on Sunday night.

The 21-year-old was part of the Nottingham Forest side who earned promotion to the Premier League following a 1-0 victory over Huddersfield at Wembley Stadium.

Contracted to Middlesbrough, Spence was allowed to leave the Riverside Stadium on loan last summer after a fallout with Warnock, who was in charge of the club at the time.

Since moving to the City Ground on loan, Spence has kicked on massively and established himself as one of Steve Cooper’s best players, as well as becoming an England Under-21 international.

Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham have been linked with a transfer move for Spence too.

Warnock, though, spoke strongly about his potential during their time together at Middlesbrough, stating that how far he went in the game would be down to his mentality – something that had been called into question at the Riverside.

Warnock said: “There are not many players where you can say it’s all up to them personally how far they go – it’s what’s between the ears.

“He could be playing at a top club in England or in a non-league in five years, I do not know.

“Application, dedication, all these things come into it. He’s got the tools, there’s no doubt about that. “

After earning promotion with Forest, Spence took to social media to aim a cheeky jibe at Warnock, saying: “Oh, where’s my manners! Welcome to Twitter, @Warnockofficial. ”

Spence’s post attracted over 75,000 likes but attracted criticism from Middlesbrough supporters who suggested that his comments proved Warnock’s concerns about his mentality were certainly justified.

Responding to the youngster’s post, Warnock shared a classy message with the defender, while also sharing a light-hearted jibe of his own.

He said: “Well done Djed.

“I did say you were Premier League or Non League, glad you listened and took my advice on board now go and enjoy your success.

“Those cigars won’t do you any good though son!”
