Whenever a football team goes through a sustained period of success, you can often look back and pinpoint the defining moments with ease.

With this Liverpool team, there are a handful you could choose from. One of them came on this day five years ago.

On June 22, 2017, Liverpool completed the signing of Mohamed Salah from Roma. Having had an initial bid of £ 28million rejected, a deal worth £ 34.3m was eventually completed.

Salah was a player that had been linked with Liverpool for several months, and one that Kopites across the globe were eager to see in a Reds shirt. As has become the norm with transfer rumors in the modern era, the phrase ‘Announce Salah’ was trending, which led to the same tagline being used in jest in the club’s announcement video.

Nobody could have predicted what happened in Salah’s first season as a Liverpool player. A mere 44 goals and 16 assists, and breaking several records along the way, including the most goals in a 38-game Premier League season.

Klopp knew what kind of Liverpool player were getting, but even he would have been surprised by the figures Salah racked up in his first season at Anfield. Even so, the German was certain that his new winger would thrive on Merseyside.

“Mohamed has the perfect mix of experience and potential – this is a really exciting signing for us,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com when Salah’s signing was announced.

“He knows the Premier League, he has pedigree in the Champions League and he is one of the most important players for his country.

“His record in Italy has been outstanding and he possesses qualities that will enhance our team and squad. I have followed him since he emerged at Basel and he has matured into a really good player.

“His pace is incredible, he gives us more attacking threat and we are already strong in this area. I like that we will make it even more competitive.

“Most important though, for us, is that he is hungry, willing and eager to be even better and improve further. He believes in what we are trying to do here at Liverpool and is extremely keen to be part of it. He is very excited about performing for our wonderful supporters.

“He is an ambitious player who wants to win and win at the highest level; he knows he can fulfill those ambitions with Liverpool.

“I welcome him and his family into our Liverpool family.”

Salah made his ambitions at Liverpool clear from the start. He wanted to win trophies and bring success back to Anfield.

While he would have to wait until his second season as a Liverpool player to achieve that, Salah would indeed bring success back to Anfield. He was sure to make it clear what he wanted to achieve as soon as he signed on the dotted line.

“I’m very excited to be here. I’m very happy, ”Salah told Liverpoolfc.com when he signed.

“I will give 100 per cent and give everything for the club. I really want to win something for this club.

“We have a great team and very good players. I was watching the games last year and everyone was giving 100 per cent to win something.

“Everyone can see the coach gives everything. I hope to see that together we can give everything to win something for the club, for the supporters and for us. ”

After 156 goals in 264 appearances, two Golden Boots, two PFA Player of the Year awards and six major trophies, Salah certainly kept his promise.
