Manchester City have unveiled a statue of Steven Gerrard outside the Etihad Stadium to acknowledge his starring role in the club’s 2014 and 2022 Premier League title triumphs.

Former Liverpool skipper Gerrard was instrumental in helping City win the league in 2014 when his iconic slip allowed the Eastlands outfit back into the title race with three games of the season remaining.

Fast forward eight years and the 41-year-old Aston Villa boss watched his side throw away a 2-0 lead, conceding three goals in five minutes against City on Sunday afternoon.

The result meant that City clinched the Premier League title and ended Liverpool’s hopes of winning an unprecedented quadruple.

To commemorate these achievements, City have unveiled a specially commissioned statue of Gerrard on his hands and knees on the Anfield turf following his slip.

The sculpture has joined the statues of former captain Vincent Kompany, legendary midfielder David Silva and 2012 title hero Sergio Aguero outside the Etihad.

“Stevie’s contribution to Manchester City’s recent success cannot be overstated,” a City insider told Paddy Power News at the unveiling.

“Slipping on his ass when Liverpool were five points clear with three games to go is the stuff of City legend.

“But to come back eight years later as a manager and gift us another title, is truly special.

“It is only fitting that Stevie has been recognized with a statue of his own, in celebration and honor of his accomplishments in one of the most important chapters of Manchester City’s rich 10-year history.

“He’ll never have to buy a pint around these parts ever again.”

In related news, Liverpool have successfully lobbied the Premier League for a second place trophy after pressure from fan groups.

Club captain Jordan Henderson hoisted the runners-up silverware in front of a packed Anfield and told PP News: “It’s an honor to be the first ever Liverpool captain to lift the ‘We Came 2nd to City But With 92pts Trophy’.

“Instead of league winners’ medals, we got these little silver stars with ‘You Tried Your Best’ engraved on them.”
