Man City Premier League champions: Updates and reaction as Gundogan leads amazing comeback vs Aston Villa

Manchester City are 90 minutes away from the Premier League title, but know anything less than a win at home to Aston Villa will give Liverpool the chance to be champions instead.

City are a point ahead of Liverpool in the table with one game remaining, meaning City will secure the title with a win. If City drop points, Liverpool will have the chance to nick the title on the final day if they can beat Wolves.

Pep Guardiola could have John Stones and Kyle Walker back to face Villa, despite the pair previously being ruled out for the season. Both have trained this week, and could be welcome returnees to a depleted City defense. Ruben Dias looks to be ruled out having not been seen in training this week.

Guardiola has encouraged City fans to be loud and proud at the Etihad today, knowing Steven Gerrard’s Villa will not make life easy for the Blues this afternoon. With events at Anfield also playing a key role in this final day, City fans are expected to give the team a big welcome to the stadium and make their voices heard throughout a tense afternoon.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Pep Guardiola says:

“It was definitely not [easy], the last game always special, always emotional. The moment we found a goal changes everything … the moment we score and equalize, I had the feeling we’d have the chance to score.!

On his half time message:

“It’s normal, we are playing not normal circumstance but you have to handle it. If you put the ball inside, Aleks give us a lot. The second goal Coutinho very difficult, it was momentum and our people did the rest.”

On bringing on Gundogan:

“Ilkay Gundo is the best runner in the second position we have, we arrive in the sides with Phil, Joao, Aleks, other people with a sense of tempo in the final third, he’s the best.”

On four titles in five years:

“Wow, we are legends. When you win in this country, 4 in 5 years, it’s because these guys are so special, we will be remembered. First time 100pts, second in Brighton, third fight without people, wow, winning at home with our people is the best. “

Fernandinho: This is the City spirit

Fernandinho, speaking to Sky Sports, says:

“A great feeling. We come back from death today, amazing feeling. At 2-o down, at home, we are a bit nervous. We struggle to find the spaces, they keep the wide spaces for us to put in the box .they have a good counter, they score the first goal.At the end, Kevin Gundo, Cancelo, Raz made the difference.

“This is the Man City spIrit, you never give up, believe until The end. It happens 10 years ago, today a bit different, but the result the same.

“it’s really emotional for me, I’m so grateful to City, was a really nice experience for me, a nice journey, they will always be in my heart”.

REPORT: City pip Liverpool FC to Title with thrilling 2012 tribute comeback

Ten years and nine days on, Manchester City won the Premier League title again, with a stunning 93:20 tribute act.

The Blues showed they have lost none of their sense of drama, and have not abandoned their excruciating capacity for putting their long-suffering supporters through the emotional wringer before three goals in five minutes – two of them from sub Ilkay Gundogan – turned the title race on its head.

With Liverpool also coming from behind to win, anything less than three points would not have sufficed and from being down among the dead men, just as they were in 2012, Pep Guardiola’s team showed incredible reserves of belief and courage to haul it back.

That triumph made it four titles in five years for the Blues, taking them into the land of legend – in post-war English football, only Liverpool and Manchester United have achieved that level of consistency.

Of course, they did it the hard way, but that simply intensified the euphoria, as fans spilled onto the pitch after the final whistle in a joyous celebration.

Player Ratings

Ederson Had no chance at all with either Villa goal, and his kicking was perfectly fine – 6

John Stones Had a torrid time at right back in the first half but looked steadier and more comfortable in the middle – 6

Fernandinho Wasn’t City’s worst defender but Villa were isolating him against Watkins and he was subbed at half time – 6

Aymeric Laporte Looked far more at home with regular partner Stones alongside in the second half – 6

Joao Cancelo Nothing went right for him at left back – poor passing and shooting, but settled nicely on the right – 6

Rodri His physical presence a factor throughout, but the finish to make it 2-2 was exquisite – 7

Gundogan: We kept things simple

Ilkay Gundogan, speaking to Sky Sports, says:

“After going 2-0 down, the chances were just very small. We have to do the simple things again in the best way. Scoring two goals, and having 10 mins to score a third gave us a boost.

“It was a positive one, especially after being 2-0 down. It was about getting that goal and we knew the momentum was on that side. We knew we had to score three in a couple of minutes and we did. We’re all fans, and these are the days you look back to, and unbelievable night. “

“I know it’s tough to say, but if Liverpool wouldn’t be there and play the way they play, very successful, this league wouldn’t be that attractive. Even though they finish just 1pt behind us they play an incredible season. They push us to the limit, it’s a sad day for them but we need to appreciate what they’ve done and especially my former coach We look forward to competing with them next season.

“Fourth in five years, it’s a huge moment, incredible achievement, we have to do it that way. It’s about the togetherness within the team, the fans in the stadium. That’s what we appreciate the most.”
