Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos was sorely missed in the heat of Sevilla as the Ibrox side fell to a heartbreaking Europa League Final penalty defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt.
Injuries to the Colombian and fellow forward Kemar Roofe had a sizeable impact on the squad as Rangers missed their talismanic forward at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.
But now Morelos – who has just turned 26 – may get an opportunity to turn out at the home of Sevilla after all if the latest reports are to be believed.
Reputable sources in Seville claim that the Spanish giants have lodged an € 8m (£ 7m) offer for the striker as he enters the final year of his deal.
These reports have been carried in Deportivo Stadium and appear to originate from El Chiringuito TV and namely Spanish journalist Gonzalo Tortosa.
On paper it’s a good match; Mr Europa League joins the club who have won the competition the most times as he seeks to fulfill his destiny competition’s greatest ever goal scorer.
Besides, Rangers have ambitions beyond Europe’s second tier competition for now.
Not that any Rangers fans will want the striker to leave; Alfredo Morelos remains a bulldozer of a forward and the club will be considerably weakened by any potential absence.
Links to Sevilla only serve to highlight this. Whilst the player trading model exists for a reason the club will have to pull something serious out of the bag to get a like-for-like replacement on the cheap.
But despite this, understanding Rangers fans are not completely averse to losing Morelos to Sevilla, even if there are major grumbles surrounding the price tag.
Rangers contracts in focus as Alfredo Morelos linked with Sevilla
There is immense scrutiny on the Rangers board to deliver a successful transfer window after a series of underwhelming windows since 2020.
Rangers director Ross Wilson has also come in for some criticism for his handling of contracts surrounding several key players.
The Gers might have managed to retain Connor Goldson, but the defender’s situation was a warning shot regarding the club’s key players.
Alfredo Morelos, Joe Aribo and Ryan Kent are all entering the final years of their contracts and interested parties will be well aware of it.
At the same time, Rangers faced a dilemma regarding these players and the success of recent seasons has arguably depended on keeping them around.
In today’s market £ 7m is almost a slap in the face for Alfredo Morelos and even with 12 months remaining fans are expecting upwards of £ 10m.
But if the Gers cannot negotiate this they risk losing the Colombian for nothing next summer, something which is genuinely unthinkable and a massive dereliction of squad management.
As this Sevilla bid for Alfredo Morelos reportedly lands, it’s somewhat woken Rangers fans up to the reality of the situation and the pressure and scrutiny is building on the Board to get things right this window.
Last season’s surrender of the league title is still fresh in the memory and fans will not accept another lacklustre, painstaking domestic campaign from this squad or board.
Whether that means players leaving for the right price and others coming into replace them, a recent spate of contract renewals combined with a quiet window to date have plenty nervous.
