Paris Saint-Germain secured their first trophy of the 2022/23 season in the Trophee des Champions on Sunday – the latest in Lionel Messi’s career haul.
Now, Messi – who got himself on the scoresheet – only needs two more trophies to be the joint-most decorated player in history.
The Argentine opened the scoring for the Parisians in the first half, bursting into the box and, despite having the option to square it to Pablo Sarabia, found the net himself.
But PSG’s trophy win means something else for Messi.
He’s now just two honors behind record-holder Dani Alves – Messi’s former Barcelona teammate sits on a tally of 43 trophies, with Messi now on 41.
And if Sunday’s tie is anything to go by, Messi can hope to catch up to Alves’ record during his time in Paris.
Christophe Galtier’s side ran riot against their opponents Nantes, scoring four times with no reply – a marked improvement on some of the below par performances PSG put in last season under former boss Mauricio Pochettino.
Neymar netted twice, sparking hope that both he and Messi can get back to their former goal scoring form that dipped last season.
Grealish tipped for Villa return as Man City star told to stop being six-out-of-ten
But it was Sergio Ramos’ goal in the Ligue 1 champions’ win that stole the show.
Following up on an initial save from the Nantes keeper, Ramos saw his chance and, after having a quick glance over his shoulder, pushed it into the net.
