‘I’m not happy to be right’

Jose Mourinho has admitted he’s ‘not happy to be right’ about the current plight of Manchester United.

The Portuguese boss, who now manages Italian side Roma, spent two and a half years at Old Trafford where he became the club’s most successful manager since the Sir Alex Ferguson era by winning the Europa League, Carabao Cup and Community Shield.

Mourinho’s spell as United boss was ended in December 2018 when he was sacked by the club as they looked to address reports of growing levels of conflict within the dressing room.

Following his departure, ‘The Special One’ suggested United needed a more fundamental cultural shift from top to bottom, rather than just giving him the boot, insisting his exit would not solve their problems.

And the now-Roma boss had admitted that he knew he was right in his assessment, even if it brings him no pleasure to say it.

Speaking to BT Sport, Mourinho said: “Of course, my English connection is Chelsea, that’s the way I see things, as a Chelsea man after two periods of Chelsea and six years.

“But at Manchester United the fans are special. There are lots of good people inside the club, so it’s not like I’m happy to be right.

“I’m not happy to be right, I’d like to be wrong. I’d like to be wrong, but I knew that I was right.

“For me, the first thing to change when things are not going right is mentality and organization, and that was not coming.

“I knew that for me to leave was not going to resolve the situation.

“I knew that unfortunately, but I wish them the best and I hope that they make it.”

Another man who knows Manchester United well is Rene Meulensteen, who has admitted that the club has looked ‘lost’ this season.

He told talkSPORT Breakfast: “There were a lot of expectations, even from myself. When Ronaldo comes in, he comes in for one reason only and that’s to improve the team and basically get United challenging again.

“They were second in the league, so no reason to believe anything else.

“For some reason there was that lack of consistency at the start of the season and performances started to fall away.

“The season has been derailed more and more. You saw the frustration kick in when they got knocked out of this competition, then they got knocked out of the FA Cup, then they lost ground in the league.

“They changed managers again and Rangnick came in.

United have certainly stalled under Rangnick

“Rangnick’s impact has not brought what everyone expected, to push for the top four and the Champions League is so important. They have been derailed and irritation has turned into frustration.

“When I see United play, I see a team that is lost. They are completely lost. There is no cohesion, no organization, no structure, any basic thing that you need in any successful performance is not there. ”

The former coach will be hoping fellow Dutchman Erik ten Hag can get the Red Devils back on the right track.
