‘I’d take Raheem Sterling over Neymar’

Darren Bent and Jack Wilshere have given their verdicts on stories linking Neymar with a Premier League transfer this summer.

The Brazilian, 30, could leave Paris Saint-Germain after president Nasser Al-Khelaifi called for a change of image at the club.

The PSG chief has been carrying out media duties recently, and fuelled transfer speculation surrounding the star after failing to give straight answers to questions over his future.

Chelsea and Newcastle are two English clubs who have been linked to the Brazil star, while Juventus have been talked about too.

But with Man City star Raheem Sterling set to leave the Etihad this summer, Bent and Wilshere believe Premier League sides would be wise to move for the England man instead of taking a punt on Neymar.

“I would rather take Raheem Sterling over Neymar in the Premier League,” Bent told talkSPORT.

“Sterling, you know what you’re going to get.”

Wilshere responded: “It is a hard one, I like them both. Going on the cautious side you would take Sterling, because you know what you get.

“He is proven. “If you were taking a gamble, and had all the money in the world which some of these teams do, you would probably take both, or just take Neymar.”

President Al-Khelaifi has never mentioned Neymar directly but is clearly looking towards changing the atmosphere at the club.

“We want young, talented, committed players with a winning mentality, people who want to die for this badge,” he told Spanish news outlet Marca.

Neymar has been questioned in the past over his workrate and desire, and with the Parisians set to embark on a new vision and strategy, it seems Neymar could soon be surplus to requirements.

Newcastle have previously been linked with a move for the player, who was signed by PSG in a £ 197million deal from Barcelona back in 2017.

Chelsea have also joined the race for his signature, however.

It would be a huge change of direction from the transfers the Magpies have completed so far, and other players they’ve been recently linked with, so it remains to be seen whether they would welcome a move.

talkSPORT’s Simon Jordan insists Neymar is not going anywhere near Tyneside this summer, however.

“Neymar isn’t going to Newcastle,” Jordan said. “It’s a silly conversation. Newcastle aren’t in that position.

Jordan believes Neymar will not be heading to Newcastle this summer

“Neymar is a global superstar. He is the embodiment of the modern-day footballer. All the talent, but lack of regard with the opportunity given.

“He isn’t going to land in Newcastle, so we might as well keep our powder dry.

“I hope Newcastle fans do not see this as a castigation of their football club, and when he is 57 he signs for them, and I get proven wrong.”

Whatever side Neymar does play for next season, even if it is PSG, they will be hoping to get more out of him than in recent times.
