A club hero during a trophy-laden 15-year stint at Ibrox, McCoist will be hoping to see the Gers claim victory in their first European final since 2008, overcoming the odds after a stunning run.

Sevilla’s Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium will host the clash against German side Frankfurt, and McCoist has been soaking in the pre-match atmosphere, whilst catching up with the players.

And he told the talkSPORT Breakfast he could not resist giving a few of them a ‘cuddle’ as he spoke of his pride for the Rangers stars.

He said: “I’m so envious, but envious isn’t the right word, we’ve all had our day.

“I had a wee chat pitchside last night with Connor Goldson and the big man [John] Lundstrom, and it was just so wonderful to look at their eyes.

“They were looking about the stadium and it was as if they wanted to pinch themselves and say, ‘are we really here?’

“I gave them both a cuddle and I just said, ‘do you know something? You’ve done us proud, regardless – and I genuinely mean it – regardless of what happens tonight you’ll obviously do your best, but try and soak it in, try and take everything in ‘. ”

A huge part of Rangers’ run to the final has been manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who replaced Steven Gerrard in the dugout after spells at Guangzhou R&F and Feyenoord.

McCoist also managed a word with head coach and his assistant Roy Makaay, with the Dutch footballing legends revealing what they have been telling the players ahead of the final showdown.

“I spoke to Gio and Roy Makaay and they were brilliant, both coaches,” McCoist said.

“They were saying look we’re trying to make it, not another game because it’s clearly not just another game, but they were just trying to play down the whole situation, saying to the boys, ‘whatever you do, enjoy the experience because you may never be here again. ‘”
