NEWS: Aston Villa teenager Carney Chukwuemeka to wait until end of season to decide future

Carney Chukwuemeka is expected to wait until the end of the season before deciding his long-term Aston Villa future.

The 18-year-old midfielder still has 15 months left to run on his deal and has been offered the opportunity to discuss an extension.

Chukwuemeka is not against prolonging his spell at the club. He has made eight substitute appearances and one start in the Premier League this season.

However, with other clubs showing an interest, he’s prepared to wait until this campaign has ended before making a decision.

Paris Saint-Germain and the wreckage of another Champions League calamity

On Wednesday evening, moments after the final whistle in Real Madrid’s Bernabeu, the Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and the club’s sporting director Leonardo descended into the bowels of the stadium.

Al-Khelaifi and Leonardo were accompanied by the PSG president’s bodyguard as they headed straight for the dressing room of referee Danny Makkelie and his fellow officials.

What happened next? How did it come to this?

The Athletic’s Adam Crafton reports.

How did Chelsea Women react to the sanctions?

They faced a tricky tie against West Ham in Dagenham last night.

“On paper, Chelsea’s game at West Ham United was nothing more than a rescheduled Women’s Super League fixture, an extra midweek football treat for fans and one of the three games in hand that Chelsea had on leaders Arsenal.

“In reality, Thursday night’s game was a rather strange spectacle. A much larger crowd than you would normally expect to see at a West Ham United Women’s game on a midweek evening poured into Dagenham to see Chelsea Women play a match just hours after one of the most seismic moments in the club’s history and maybe even English football. “

The Athletic’s Florence Lloyd-Hughes was there to discover more.

NEWS: Emile Smith Rowe likely to return for Arsenal against Leicester

Arsenal striker Emile Smith-Rowe is likely to make his return from COVID-19 against Leicester City.

The 21-year-old rejoined training last week, but had not recovered enough from the after-effects of the virus to feature against Watford last weekend.

He has not been featured since February 19, when he scored the opening goal in a 2-1 win over Brentford.

This has been Smith-Rowe’s breakthrough season in the first-team, having scored 10 goals in 25 appearances.

Manager Mikel Arteta also revealed that the return of right-back Takehiro Tomiyasu is still being assessed. The Japanese international has not played since the Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg against Liverpool, having struggled with his calf throughout the winter.

Roy Hodgson: Watford are ‘running out of time’

Last night saw an ugly 4-0 loss at Wolves. They are three points away from safety, but have played more than the teams around them.

Manager Hodgson said: “Wolves are a quality team. At half-time we were staring down the barrel of a gun.

“It was a wonder chip from Ruben Neves but at 3-0 you are in big trouble. All the goals are mistakes, some are clearer mistakes than others.

“It was disappointing in every respect. We have a very sad dressing room. It gets hard when your players do not care enough, but we are not in that position yet. We have to hold our hands up that we are not good enough at times, but not that they do not care.

“These players need to feel anxiety because we are running out of time.”

What is the legacy of the Abramovich era?

A hawkish position on this might be that Abramovich’s millions – whose origins we now know more about – stopped Arsenal from retaining the league in 2004-05, stopped Manchester United from winning it the following year and stopped United again in 2009-10.

Every club whose wealth was clean, or at least cleaner than Abramovich’s, and who was overtaken by Chelsea, might have a legitimate grievance against the “pro-Kremlin oligarch” whose spending gave Chelsea the edge. And if Abramovich’s backing is wrong now, was it right enough in 2003 that we should have allowed it to upend English football?

Tottenham fan groups call for extension of season ticket renewal deadline

Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust, Proud Lilywhites, and SpursAbility have released a joint statement saying: “With the highest levels of inflation in over 30 years, increasing interest rates, a 10% rise in National Insurance contributions, increasing costs of diesel and petrol, the annual above-inflation rise in train fares and the upcoming increase in home fuel bills, fans’ finances are going to be stretched like never before.

“This means that budgeting becomes even more important, and whilst some fans will have saved to be able to pay for the extremely expensive Season Tickets, others will now be faced with a choice of utilizing those funds for their Season Ticket or just to heat their “Therefore, to only allow potentially a ‘2 pay-day’ period in which to pay for Season Tickets shows a worrying disregard for the economic realities facing many of your customers.”

They ask for the deadline to be moved from April 27 to May 31.

Chelsea fans asked to stop singing Abramovich’s name

“I understand why Chelsea fans have some affection for him, but when the regime he is associated with is committing atrocities that is more important than football,” technology minister Chris Philp told BBC Radio Four.

“So I would ask them to think very carefully before doing that again because the barbaric acts of the Putin regime which Abramovich has supported is far more important than football.”

Fans chanted his name during Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Norwich last night.

NEWS: Firmino back from injury for Liverpool’s game against Brighton but COVID cases cause issues

Roberto Firmino is set to return to action for Liverpool at Brighton on Saturday – but Jurgen Klopp revealed they have some fresh issues with COVID-19.

The Brazil international has missed the past six matches due to an adductor problem but has got a week’s full training under his belt at Kirkby.

Klopp did not name which players or staff have tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the squad flying to the south coast.

“Bobby is fine,” says Klopp. “Nothing new injury-wise but COVID is not over. These kind of things are still going on. We have or at least we had… .. we will see how that’s going on. We train later.

“We try absolutely everything to avoid it but it’s not really possible. Players or staff who have it now have no symptoms which is good but still they can not be involved so we will see. ”
