Key dates from new Championship season as fixtures released

Steve Bruce’s West Bromwich Albion will face Championship rivals and his old club Sheffield United in the pick of the first round Carabao Cup ties.

The two sides will be hoping for an improvement on last season with the Baggies finishing a disappointing tenth whilst United fell short in the play-off semi-finals.

Another intriguing clash sees two-time winners Norwich City take on 2011 winners Birmingham City. The Canaries are back in the Championship after relegation from the Premier League last term.

Sunderland, who reached the quarter-finals last year as a third tier club, travel to Sheffield Wednesday who will be hoping for revenge after the Black Cats dumped them out of the League One play-offs last season.

Swansea, the most recent winners in this stage of the competition following their 2013 triumph, travel to Oxford whilst Stockport County, who sealed promotion by winning the National League title last season, face a trip to Harrogate.

First round games are scheduled to be played week commencing August 10.

Of the relegated trio to come down from the Premier League, only Norwich City will be in the hat for the first round. That is because they finished 20th, with Watford and Burnley both receiving byes.

Swansea are the most recent winners of the League Cup to be participating in the first round, having won the competition in 2013

Those two will enter at the second round stage along with the 13 Premier League sides not competing in Europe: Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton, Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham, Leeds, Leicester, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Wolves.

Holders Liverpool, who overcame Chelsea in last season’s final at Wembley on penalties, will enter in round three along with the six other Premier League sides in Europe: Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham and West Ham.

The draw came on a busy day for the EFL, with the league fixtures for all 72 clubs being released and the first round draw for the Papa Johns Trophy also taking place. Among the eye-catching groups in the EFL Trophy is the one containing Salford City and Liverpool’s under-21s whilst Wayne Rooney’s Derby County will face Manchester City’s youngsters in one of their three group clashes.
